Cora's 80th birthday

George William Byrd, born about 1730 and died about 1825 Jacks Creek, Yancey Co as attested by his estate decided by the N. C. Supreme Court, a matter of inheritance regarding a deceased dauther and her children (24 NC 72, 1841). He served in the Revolutionary War, and was present when the British commander at York town surrendered. Evidently he met his wife to be Annie Hutson in Virginia, but her family disaproved of the notion and sent her to schoole in Charleston, South Carolina. He followed and they were wed possibly at her Aunts house, but there is no record of the marriage (Lloyd Bailey).
They moved several places before settling first to Dandridge, Tennessee, then in 1782 to Washington or Sullivan Co (NC?), then Madison County, and about 1796 to Jacks Creek, Yancey County, NC.

Notes for Samuel J. Byrd:
Samuel J. BYRD Rev. was born about 1788 in VA. He died on 5 Apr 1865 in Jacks Creek, NC. Served in the NC State Assembly on four occasions (1835-36, 1836-37, 1842-43, and 1858-59. Murdered at his home by a group of Union soldiers. One report states he was murdered by Confederate draft dodgers.
"The Reverend Samuel Dallas Byrd was a Baptist Circuit Preacher in the small Jack's Creek Community of Yancey County, North Carolina. Born in Virginia, Samuel D. Byrd moved with his family to Yancey County where he later built a two story log home, and had a Grist Mill on Jack's Creek. Samuel D. Byrd was a fairly affluent man during his time, and even had three or four slaves. He was also known as a staunch Secessionist and was killed at his own home because of this. It is reported that Samuel had cached a small supply of arms and ammunition at his home, and word of that fact spread throughout the community. Samuel Bennett who had been a ward of Samuel D. Byrd and was reported to have probably been his illegitimate son, and a strong Union Sympathizer came calling on the old man to (as he put it in a later statement to the local authorities) "just to borrow" the guns and ammunition. Samuel D. Byrd was warned of the approach of the Union folks by one of his slaves, went upstairs to where he had a gun hole and pointed his gun on the Union men. Samuel D. Byrd ordered them not to come throught the gate, but Bennett dismounted his horse and started through the gate saying, "Now, Uncle Sammy..." at that point in time Samuel D. Byrd shot Bennett in the side, eventually killing him. The other men in the procession led by Bennett (a total of 22 others) shot and killed Rev. Samuel D. Byrd. As my cousin, and good friend Dr. Lloyd Bailey said when we visited the graveyard on Mose Anglin Branch where Samuel D. Byrd is buried, "There lies old Samuel D., with probably about 22 bullet holes in him".
"The Rev. Samuel J. Byrd (1789-1865), who married Mary ("Polly") Briggs, lived on Jacks Creek, and is buried in a marked grave with his parents. This distinguished gentleman, who represented Yancy County four times in the State Legislature and held a number of other county offices, was murdered at his home by Union soldiers (a story which I related at length in the Yancy Journal newspaper 6/14/1984). A large number decendants survive in most of the states of the U.S."

An entire new side to the Clinkingbeard genealogy has opened to me after a visit with a distant relative. After seeing my web site I recieved a call from Jane Case-Defreese from LA. Jane was a wealth of information and so interesting. I was able to pursue the Rimmer, Bilderback, Case, Luallin and many other family names. Jane 's great, great, great grandmother is Mary Polly Whitaker-Rimmer. John and Mary Rimmer's daughter is Dinah Rimmer-Clinkingbeard, Dinah is A.B.'s mother and A.B. was Mike and Melody's grandpa, thus the link! As over-whelming as this search can be a times it is so interesting to see where our family goes!

1. FRANCIS1 PUGH was born Abt. 1630 in Wales, and died in Virginia.
Notes for FRANCIS PUGH:
The son of a Welsh squire who lived at "Glendower Hall", Francis emigrated, with brothers Daniel and Thomas, to Jamestown, Virginia in 1666. Francis, the eldest, settled near Suffolk, Va. in Nansemond Co. and built a "commodius" brick (imported from England) residence he christened "Jericho". Daniel Pugh and his family moved to SC. Thomas and family moved to West Va. and the Ohio region.
From the E.W. Pugh collection, circa 1884 , he states:
"... it is implicitly believed by the older members of the famiy that the name was originally 'ap Hugh'
(Welsh),.. 'son of Hugh', eventually corrupted into the English name Pugh .. the older members also believe that we descended from SIr Owen Glendower through a son of his, Hugh Glendower"

Bruce and Pam Clinkingbeard
Thomas Bilderback, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Union township, Laclede county, Mo., was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, February 3, 1822, and is a son of Daniel and Sarah (Castleman) Bilderback, natives respectively of Virginia and Pennsyl- vania, the former born March 17, 1797 and the latter February 27, 1794. The parents were married in Pennsylvania in December, 1817, and in December, 1824, they moved to Licking county, Ohio. They lived in Ohio until 1834, when they went to Fountain County, Ind., remaining there until May, 1836, when they settled in St. Clair county, Ill. Early in the year 1837 they settled in Laclede county, Mo., where Daniel Bilder- back died October 16, 1863, and his wife in November, 1865. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and the first sermon preach- ed in the western part of Laclede county was at the residence of Daniel Bilderback. He devoted his whole life to the pursuit of farming and stock raising, at which he was very successful. In the early history of the county he was associate judge for a number of years. There were ten children born to Daniel and Sarah Bilderback, of whom six are supp- osed to be living, viz.: Margaret (wife of J.L. Rimmer, a farmer of Wayne county, Iowa, who is also engaged in the hotel business at Con- fidence), Susan (the widow of Alva Benson, is living in Laclede county), Hester (married S. S. Lowrence, and is now living in Hill county, Tex.), Daniel (went to California in 1852), Henry C. (is a merchant and farmer in Hill county, Tex.) and Elizabeth (became the wife of P. M. Stewart, and it is not known whether she is living or not.) Since his twenty- first year Thomas Bilderback has been engaged in farming, and has been very successful in his chosen occupation. September 27, 1846, he married Sarah J. Rimmer, who was born in South Carolina, and is a daughter of John Rimmer, who came from Tennessee to Missouri about 1845. Mrs. Bilderback died in Laclede county, July 4, 1880, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years, and a loving wife and mother. Of their seven children, five are now living, viz.: Henry L. (who married Sarah L. Cossey, is living near his father), Sarah J. (now Mrs. Alexander S. Luallin, a prominent farmer of Laclede county was September 9, 1851), Stephen W. (was born December 29, 1852), Thomas J. (born May 7, 1855), Margaret E. (at home, was born January 19, 1862). Those deceased were Mary E. (born July 28, 1848, died December 21, 1869; she was the wife of A. S. Luallin). The other child died in infancy. During the late war Mr. Bilderback served six months in the State Militia. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years. He is a Republican in politics, and is an enterprising citizen of Union township.
T.J. Bilderback is the son of Thomas B. and Sarah (Rimmer) Bilderback.

William K. Pugh, Sr. was born as the son of John M. and Mary Polly Donelson Pugh and the grandson of Dr. Joseph Hill and Elizabeth C. Foley Pugh. He married Elizabeth D. Hutcheson and became the father of three daughters and a son in the few six years they were married before his death.
It is true that it can not positively be proven where he is buried but the most likely place is in the Hutcheson Cemetery located on his wife's father's property. If this is proven not to be fact then it can be changed when the exact place is discovered. He is being given this memorial so he can be linked to other family members.
Daughter, Amy Jane, married Archibald Cook Anderson and she died in 1936 and is buried at Yellville, AR. Daughter, Nancy Eveline, married William Thomas Evans and she died after the 1880 census with burial record unknown to me. Daughter, Margaret Lucinda, married James M. Clinkenbeard and she died 13 Nov 1902 in Baxter County.
